Robberg Nature Reserve, Nature reserve near Plettenberg Bay, South Africa
Robberg Nature Reserve is a protected area on a long peninsula near Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route in South Africa. The peninsula is made up of old rocks, cliffs, sand dunes, and a coastline where land meets the open ocean.
The area around Robberg has been used by people for over 100,000 years, as shown by finds in the caves along the peninsula. The Nelson Bay Cave in particular contains Stone Age artifacts that reveal how early inhabitants lived on this coastline.
The reserve has three trails of different lengths, all starting from the same entry point near the parking area. It is best to go early in the day, as the wind can pick up and the sun on the open terrain is strong; bring sturdy shoes and enough water.
From certain points on the peninsula, visitors can watch great white sharks moving through the bay without ever entering the water. The rocks that make up the peninsula are also around 120 million years old, making them some of the oldest formations along this stretch of coast.
