Maloti Mountains, Mountain range in northern Lesotho
The Maloti Mountains are a mountain range in eastern Lesotho formed by sandstone with basalt layers on top, reaching a maximum elevation of 3,482 meters. This layered geology creates the dramatic landscape that stretches across the region.
The mountains formed as part of the Great Escarpment of the Drakensberg system, which connects Lesotho's northeastern border with South Africa. This dramatic ridge developed through geological processes over millions of years.
The name Maloti comes from the Sotho language and means mountain, defining the character of eastern Lesotho and the identity of the local people.
The best time to explore is from May to September when dry winter conditions prevail, though snow can occur year-round at higher elevations. Plan for variable weather conditions with appropriate gear.
The mountains serve as the source of major southern African rivers including the Orange and Tugela, which flow thousands of kilometers southward and eastward. The range plays a crucial role in water supply for much of the southern continent.
