Bokong Nature Reserve

Bokong Nature Reserve is a protected area in the Lesotho highlands at approximately 3,090 meters elevation, featuring grasslands, heathlands, and wetlands that support diverse mountain vegetation. The Bokong River originates here, and the terrain displays the rolling character of high-altitude mountain country.

The reserve was established in recent decades through conservation efforts focused on protecting the mountain ecosystems and water sources crucial to the Lesotho highlands. These initiatives recognized the need to safeguard this region's natural systems and landscapes.

Stone structures called metebo scattered across the land show how mountain communities once managed livestock in this high region. These remains connect visitors to the daily work and life of people who lived here long ago.

The area is accessible by foot, with hiking trails winding through the mountain landscape at varying difficulty levels. Visitors should bring warm clothing as conditions tend to be windy and cool at this elevation, whatever the season.

The Lepaqoa Waterfall transforms into a towering column of ice during winter months when temperatures drop to extreme levels at this elevation. This natural phenomenon creates a striking visual display that few visitors witness.
