Teyateyaneng, Commercial hub in Berea District, Lesotho
Teyateyaneng is a commercial center in a mountainous region on a high plateau at roughly 1,700 meters, situated between two rivers. The town brings together markets, shops, schools, and a medical facility that serves the surrounding area.
The town was founded in 1886 and dates from when British administration controlled the region. It was established as an administrative seat to improve control over this mountainous part of the country.
Artisans throughout the town run workshops where they create traditional tapestries, pottery, beadwork, and wood carvings that showcase Basotho craftsmanship. These skills remain visible today and pass from one generation to the next.
The place lies about 40 kilometers northeast of the capital and is reachable via the main highway heading north. Visitors will find accommodations, markets, and shops that support daily needs.
Rock caves in the hills surrounding the town contain ancient paintings made by earlier peoples, long before settlers came to live here. These artworks show that this highland was inhabited much earlier than its modern founding.
