Wanderers Stadium, Cricket stadium in Illovo, South Africa
Wanderers Stadium is a cricket venue in Illovo, a suburb of Johannesburg in South Africa, covering a large site. Five tall floodlight towers rise above the complex and illuminate the playing field after dark.
The ground opened in 1956 for its first matches and served as a venue for regional games for decades. After the country's return to international cricket in 1991, the entire complex underwent a complete rebuild and modernization.
Local teams play their home games here, drawing families and friends into the stands where they cheer together and enjoy traditional braai food from the kiosks. On match days, the venue becomes a meeting point where people gather outside the gates and discuss the latest games.
Multiple entrances are spread around the grounds and ease access to the different seating areas. Visitors find food stands and parking spaces across the site, which holds around 34,000 spectators.
In 2006, the South African team broke the world record here for the highest successful run chase, scoring 438 against Australia. That match entered history and is still recounted by fans today.
