University of Zululand, public university in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
The University of Zululand is a higher education institution in Empangeni with multiple campuses, including the main campus in KwaDlangezwa and additional facilities in Richards Bay opened in 2009. The campus grounds feature teaching buildings with red roofs, practical work labs, a library, and green spaces for relaxation between classes.
The university was founded in 1960 to make higher education accessible in northern South Africa and has grown to include multiple locations over time. The Richards Bay campus was added later to serve more students and support local industries such as transport and tourism.
The university's name reflects the Zulu culture and people of this South African region. Visitors will notice the campus brings together people from different backgrounds who share their traditions and gather in small groups while studying and relaxing under the trees.
The university is located about 1.4 kilometers southeast of the R102 road and is easily accessible from different directions. Visitors will find shops, markets, and restaurants nearby, with accommodation options available both on campus in dormitories and in the surrounding town.
The campus houses a Science Centre at Richards Bay that has operated for more than 30 years and features over 130 exhibits from local and international sources. In 2017, the centre launched Africa's first Early Childhood Development Museum to inspire young minds early about science and learning.
