Archaeological excavations in the 1940s revealed significant Australopithecus Africanus fossils dating back millions of years, establishing the site's importance in human evolution studies.

The cave system holds numerous rock art panels created by indigenous communities, documenting the daily life and traditions of early inhabitants in the region.

Guided tours of the valley require advance reservations through the reserve management office, with visits scheduled between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM daily.

The limestone caves contain a collection of prehistoric tools and remains, including the famous Makapansgat pebble, showing early hominid cognitive capabilities.
