The stone fortification stands on an elevated position, featuring a five-meter lookout tower and robust walls constructed using local materials.
Built in 1865 by Alexander Merensky of the Berlin Mission Society, the fort protected Christian converts from conflicts with local Bantu tribes.
The fort formed the center of the Berliner Mission Society, incorporating both Western and Sotho architectural elements in its design.
Located 13 kilometers from Middelburg on the route to Groblersdal, the site remains open for visitors to explore its military architecture.
Within one year of its construction, the fort's population expanded to 420 people, establishing a substantial missionary community.
