Roodeplaat Nature Reserve, Nature reserve and wildlife sanctuary at Roodeplaat Dam, Gauteng, South Africa.
Roodeplaat Nature Reserve is a protected area near Pretoria combining open grasslands, wooded sections, and water bodies across rolling terrain. The dam in the northeastern part creates a focal point for water-based features, while the surrounding landscape transitions between different habitat types.
The area became an official nature reserve in 1977 after the dam had served the region for about two decades. This designation brought organized protection and gradual development of visitor facilities and wildlife management programs.
The reserve takes its name from the reddish soil that colors the landscape throughout the protected area. Visitors experience a landscape shaped by its natural ecology, where wildlife moves freely across open and wooded terrain.
The northern section offers boating and fishing opportunities on the water, while the southern area is better for walking and observing wildlife. A marked trail winds through different landscapes with rest areas and viewing points along the way.
Over 250 bird species inhabit the reserve and can be observed from dedicated viewing platforms built for this purpose. This exceptional avian diversity attracts birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts seeking to encounter species found across different southern African regions.
