Wolkberg Wilderness Area, Protected wilderness area in Limpopo, South Africa.
Wolkberg Wilderness Area is a 22,000-hectare protected expanse in Limpopo's mountains, with steep terrain, deep valleys, and waterfalls carved by the Mohlapitse River. Rocky outcrops and dense forests cover much of the landscape, creating a natural setting where water flows constantly from higher elevations downward.
The area gained official protection in 1977 as a nature reserve. Before that time, various communities had inhabited different sections of the region.
The wilderness serves as a scientific research site, maintaining natural ecosystems and providing essential water resources to nearby communities.
Access requires a permit, with basic camping facilities located at Klipdraai forest station and along the Mohlapitse River. Hiking trails are marked, but visitors should prepare for changing weather and uneven ground.
Devils Knuckles are striking quartzite rock formations that rise within the reserve. This geological feature catches the eye of anyone moving through the landscape.
