Mbombela Stadium, Football and rugby stadium in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, South Africa
Mbombela Stadium is an all-seater football and rugby ground 6 km west of Mbombela, with 43,500 seats, 94% of them under a 1,450-tonne roof. The roof floats 8 m above the bowl on 18 supports shaped like giraffes, and the seats are patterned with zebra stripes. The facade mixes orange-red wall panels with grey supports and stair towers.
Construction began in February 2007 and was completed in November 2009 by a South African–French consortium of Basil Read and Bouygues, at a cost of R1,050 million funded entirely by central government. The stadium hosted matches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. It is now the home ground of TS Galaxy and the Pumas rugby team.
The stadium lies about 6 km west of central Mbombela and roughly 12 km from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport. The upper tier is reached by eight wide ramps at the corners, which also carry small delivery vehicles, while the middle tier is served by lifts. The pitch is floodlit to 2,200 lux with full diesel backup power.
