Sona-Bata, Religious settlement in Bas-Congo Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Sona-Bata is a religious settlement located in the Lukaya district, roughly 80 kilometers south of Kinshasa. The community is organized around a church and several social institutions that serve the local population.
Scheutist missionaries founded Sona-Bata in the late 1800s and built the Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs church. The Belgian Redemptorists took over the settlement's administration in 1910.
The settlement is home to schools and an orphanage established by the Daughters of Charity, institutions that continue to shape community life today. These facilities serve as central gathering spaces for families in the area.
The settlement sits along a main road that connects it to larger cities in the region, making access straightforward for visitors. Local roads can be used to navigate and explore the community.
Sona-Bata is the birthplace of musician Franco, born there in 1938. He later became one of the most influential artists in Congolese music history.
