Piton Hyacinthe, Mountain peak in Plaine des Cafres, Reunion Island.
Piton Hyacinthe is a mountain peak in the Plaine des Cafres on Reunion Island, rising to an elevation of 1,372 meters. The slopes are covered with geraniums and acacia trees growing among cultivated agricultural fields.
The peak is named after Father Hyacinthe, a Capuchin monk who arrived on the island in 1689. He participated in significant events during the early colonial period of the archipelago.
The area around the peak was for many years an important center for geranium essential oil production, a crop that shaped the lives of many local residents. This farming tradition remains visible today in the cultivated fields and cultivation methods you can observe while walking through the region.
A circular hiking trail of about 3.6 kilometers goes around the peak with an elevation gain of about 130 meters. The route works well for a half-day outing and provides regular views across the surrounding farmland.
The summit hosts telecommunications antennas at its highest point that have been responsible for digital television broadcasting across the entire island since 2010. This installation makes the location a key technological hub for the region.
