Pitons des Roches Tendres, Summit in Saint-Leu, Réunion, France.
Pitons des Roches Tendres is a 75-meter-high summit near Saint-Leu topped with distinctive rock formations. From this vantage point, you can see across the western coast and observe both the former factory grounds and the salt pans below.
The summit takes its name from the soft rocks that were once extracted to build the salt production facilities at Pointe au Sel. These stones became essential to the industrial growth of the area.
The Sugar and Salt Trail connects two worlds of work that shaped the lives of locals: those who labored in the salt pans and those in the Stella Matutina factory nearby. Walking this path, you follow the actual routes people used to travel between these two places.
The circular trail is about 5.5 kilometers long with roughly 140 meters of elevation gain and takes around two hours to complete. Equipped picnic spots along the way let you rest and enjoy the views.
From the summit, you see two contrasting worlds side by side: the industrial factory ruins and the traditional salt pans worked by hand. This view shows how different ways of working coexisted in one small area.
