Grande Ravine viaduct, Delta-leg bridge in Les Trois-Bassins, Reunion Island
The Grande Ravine Viaduct is a road bridge spanning 288 meters across a deep ravine, supported by two angled prestressed concrete legs. The structure is 20 meters wide and connects Saint-Paul to Etang-Sale on the western side of the island.
The bridge was built from 2006 to 2009 to ease traffic on the island's main national road. Its completion significantly reduced congestion in the region.
The structure links two coastal communities and shapes the landscape of the western coast as a defining engineering landmark. Local residents depend on this route daily as a vital connection through their region.
The bridge sits at about 250 meters above sea level and is straightforward to access by car. The structure has monitoring systems that continuously track its structural health.
The structure can withstand wind gusts up to 270 kilometers per hour and was designed specifically for the cyclone conditions of the region. This resilience allows the bridge to perform reliably for decades under extreme weather.
