Saint-Leu extends from sea level to an elevation of 2,787 meters on the western coast of Réunion island in the Indian Ocean.
The district gained its official status in 1790, following the establishment of a parish by Governor François de Souillac in 1776.
The Notre-Dame de La Salette chapel, constructed during the 1860s, stands as a central religious monument drawing numerous worshippers throughout the year.
