Plaines Wilhems encompasses four main towns: Beau Bassin-Rose Hill, Curepipe, Quatre Bornes, and Vacoas-Phoenix, covering 203.3 square kilometers of urban territory.

The district received its name from Wilhem Leicknig, a Prussian settler who established himself on the island of Mauritius in 1721 during the French colonial period.
