Plaines Wilhems

Plaines Wilhems is an administrative district in central Mauritius composed of four independent towns: Beau Bassin-Rose Hill, Curepipe, Quatre Bornes, and Vacoas-Phoenix. Together these towns form a densely populated urban area with varied neighborhoods, shops, and residential zones.

Plaines Wilhems takes its name from Wilhelm Leicknig, a Prussian settler who arrived in 1721 during the French colonial period. The area evolved from agricultural land into an urban center over the following centuries.

The region hosts numerous schools and universities that draw students from across the country. These educational institutions shape the character of the towns and make the area a learning center for the island.

The region is managed by four separate town councils rather than a central district authority like other areas of the island. Local services and inquiries are handled through the municipal offices of the individual towns.

This area is the most populated on the island, concentrating a large portion of residents in a relatively small space. This high population density gives the streets and markets a lively, bustling feeling.
