University of Mauritius, national university in Mauritius
The University of Mauritius is a higher education institution in Moka with multiple faculties including Agriculture, Engineering, Science, Social Studies and Humanities, and Ocean Studies. The campus spans open, green grounds with functional buildings, trees, and grassy spaces where students move between classes throughout the day.
The university was established in 1965 by law, replacing an earlier School of Agriculture that was later integrated into the new institution. In 1972, Queen Elizabeth II attended its formal opening ceremony, marking a significant moment in the country's development.
The university reflects Mauritian traditions, especially during special events where students wear traditional clothing and celebrate local music and dance. These cultural activities connect students to their roots and shape the everyday experience on campus.
The campus is well served by bus and car access with parking lots and walking paths that make navigation easy. Small cafes and snack bars scattered across the grounds offer refreshments between classes.
The Faculty of Ocean Studies is a relatively new department growing rapidly and specializing in marine resources and ocean stewardship. Though it still enrolls fewer students, it represents the region's growing focus on marine research.
