Kitengela, municipality in Kajiado County, Kenya
Kitengela is a municipality in Kajiado County, situated about 30 kilometers south of Nairobi on rolling terrain. The town comprises open grassland dotted with acacia trees, mixed residential areas with standalone homes and gated communities, local markets and shops, and public facilities including schools and health clinics.
The area originated from Kitengela Group Ranch, a large communal pastoral land spanning more than 21,000 hectares, which was subdivided into smaller parcels in 1988 to promote individual land ownership and agricultural use. This transition from communal to private land marked the start of modern settlement and residential growth.
Kitengela is known locally as 'Kite' and serves as a residential destination where families build homes in gated compounds. The growing population shapes the space as a place of personal property ownership and private community living.
The town sits on the Namanga transnational highway and is well connected by road, with regular matatus and boda bodas linking it to nearby cities like Nairobi. Visitors should note that water supply comes from boreholes and water tanks, which can be limited during drier periods, as most facilities rely on rainwater harvesting methods.
Club 034 is a stylish lounge built inside an old airplane, offering visitors an unusual experience with authentic aircraft design and comfortable seating. The venue hosts weddings and parties and even includes a children's play area with bouncing castles, making it a notable entertainment destination.
