Watarrka National Park

Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park features 100-meter-high red sandstone walls rising above Kings Creek, forming a natural corridor through ancient rock formations.

The Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife Commission established Watarrka National Park in 1989, preserving 1,051 square kilometers of central Australian wilderness.

The name Watarrka comes from the Aboriginal Luritja language, referring to the umbrella bush that grows throughout this land of profound indigenous significance.

The park maintains sealed roads for standard vehicles, with facilities including drinking water stations, restrooms, and designated trails for different fitness levels.

The protected area contains sixty rare plant species, including the ancient MacDonnell Ranges Cycad, which survives in the sheltered environment of Kings Creek.
