West Sumbawa Regency

West Sumbawa is an administrative region on Sumbawa Island that spreads across hilly and coastal terrain divided into eight districts. The area shows a mix of flat land along the shores and higher ground in the interior.

This region was established in December 2003 when five western districts split away from the original Sumbawa Regency. The division created a new independent administrative unit with its own government structure.

The region's people celebrate local traditions through ceremonies and festivals that reflect their heritage throughout the year. The area is known for its distinctive cooking, particularly Ayam Taliwang, a spiced chicken dish that visitors often seek out.

Visitors reach the region by ferry services that arrive at Poto Tano harbor on Sumbawa's western coast. This harbor connects the area to the neighboring island of Lombok and other destinations.

Rantung Beach in Sekongkang district draws surfers from across the region for its waves and water sports. Nearby, Taliwang Lake provides a home to several bird species in its natural setting.
