Tangerang

Tangerang sits west of Jakarta in Banten Province and includes industrial zones, residential districts, and green spaces across a sprawling urban area. The city alternates between densely built quarters with narrow streets and more open sections where factories and warehouses line up.

The Dutch East India Company took control of the region in April 1684, ending the previous rule by the Banten Sultanate. Since then the settlement grew into a hub between Jakarta and the western parts of Java.

The Cina Benteng community preserves its traditions through old temples and residential quarters scattered across the urban area. Visitors can observe prayer rituals and find traditional architectural elements that differ from the newer parts of town.

Commuter trains and buses connect the area to Jakarta, while Soekarno-Hatta International Airport sits nearby. Those exploring the city move best in smaller sections, as distances are long and traffic often slows down.

The population dropped between 2015 and 2020 from over two million to under 1.9 million, an unusual trend for an urban region in Indonesia. The decline may relate to boundary adjustments or migration to neighboring districts, yet it remains a topic of local discussions.
