Gajah Mungkur Reservoir, Water reservoir in Wonogiri Regency, Central Java, Indonesia.
Gajah Mungkur Reservoir is a water reservoir in Wonogiri Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. The water surface covers seven subdistricts, retained by a dam that rises 40 meters and runs 830 meters from end to end.
Work on the reservoir began in 1976, diverting the Bengawan Solo River and flooding 51 villages in the process. The facility became operational in 1982, generating hydroelectric power and supplying water to the region since then.
The reservoir takes its name from Gajah Mungkur, a white elephant from local legend symbolizing wealth and fertility. Fishers work the waters for aquaculture and catch, while families visit the shore on weekends to cook outdoors and spend time together.
The shoreline areas allow for walking and taking in views across the water, especially in the morning or afternoon. Boats operate on the reservoir and bring visitors to quieter spots where fish are raised.
The reservoir sits 137 meters above sea level and can occasionally produce waterspouts. One formed above the water in January 2021, swirling for 15 minutes and drawing curious onlookers.
