National Press Monument

The National Press Monument is a history museum in Surakarta dedicated to Indonesian journalism. The multi-story building displays newspapers, magazines, printing equipment, and photographs documenting media development across different decades.

The building was originally constructed in 1918 as a social club before becoming a museum in 1978. This transformation made it a repository for records of Indonesian press history.

The building tells the story of Indonesian journalism through documents and personal items from journalists who shaped the nation's communication. These objects show how reporters and editors worked to inform the public across different eras.

The museum is open most weekdays and works best in the morning when the spaces are quieter. Comfortable shoes are useful since you will climb several stairways to explore all exhibition levels.

The museum holds one of Indonesia's largest newspaper collections, with some publications from before independence. These materials show how journalists reported during and after the nation's founding period.
