Cetho, Hindu temple on Mount Lawu, Indonesia
Cetho is a Hindu temple on Mount Lawu in East Java, Indonesia, that spreads across eleven terraces. Stone pathways connect the different levels and lead to the highest point, where the main structure stands.
The complex was built in the 15th century under King Brawijaya V during the late Majapahit period. It belongs to the last Hindu constructions on Java before Islam became the dominant religion.
The name comes from Old Javanese and refers to purification, visible in the pools and springs that visitors use today for ritual washing. Locals come here to pray and leave offerings of flowers and incense, especially during Javanese holidays.
The access road runs through steep mountain roads past villages and tea plantations, about 40 kilometers from Surakarta. The paths between the terraces require sturdy shoes, and mornings offer clearer and cooler air.
Some of the stone reliefs show symbols and motifs that resemble depictions from other ancient cultures, raising questions about early trade routes. These unusual decorations are especially noticeable on the lower terraces, where they stand alongside Javanese motifs.
