HMS Electra, 1934 E-class destroyer
HMS Electra was a destroyer built for the Royal Navy in the early 1930s and launched in 1934. The vessel measured approximately 100 meters in length and carried guns and torpedoes designed for combat against enemy ships and escort duties.
Built by Hawthorn Leslie and Company in 1934, the ship served on Mediterranean patrols and operations off Spain during the 1930s. During World War II, it participated in convoy escorts, rescued survivors from the HMS Repulse, and engaged Japanese forces in the Java Sea in February 1942, where it was sunk after sustaining multiple hits.
The wreck rests at approximately 160 feet (49 meters) underwater near Indonesia and is accessible only to experienced divers. The site lies near other warship wrecks from the same period, making it significant for marine archaeologists and history enthusiasts.
The wreck was discovered by divers in 2003 and had been covered with fishing nets and damaged by illegal salvage operations over the years. Despite this deterioration, parts such as the quad torpedo tubes and gun mounts remained visible, preserving evidence of the vessel's combat capability.
