Surabaya Gubeng railway station, Railway station in Gubeng District, Surabaya, Indonesia.
Surabaya Gubeng is a railway station in Gubeng District, Surabaya, Indonesia, with six tracks serving trains heading to southern and eastern Java. The architecture combines traditional Chalet elements with contemporary structures following a comprehensive renewal toward the end of the twentieth century.
The station opened in the mid-nineteenth century as part of a railway connection between Surabaya and Pasuruan during Dutch colonial times. A major overhaul in the nineteen nineties brought modern facilities and greatly expanded capacity.
The name Gubeng comes from the Javanese language and points to the historical importance of the district. Travelers today use the complex as an important meeting point before longer journeys to the south or east.
The site includes ticket counters, waiting areas, and a covered parking area east of the main building. A mosque is located within the complex and can be used by travelers at any time.
Sukarno, who later became Indonesia's first president, worked as a young man at this station while studying in Bandung. Few passengers know that the future head of state earned his living here.
