Cristo Rei of Dili, Monument in Dili, East Timor.
Cristo Rei of Dili is a monument on Cape Fatucama featuring a copper Jesus figure positioned above a spherical globe structure. The entire installation rises about 27 meters and offers views of the coastline and city from the top.
The monument was inaugurated in 1996 as a gesture during East Timor's period as an Indonesian province. Following independence in 2000, it remained an important landmark for the newly formed nation.
The site serves as a pilgrimage destination where visitors walk past 14 stations representing the Stations of the Cross. Many people visit to engage in this spiritual practice, which remains central to the local Catholic community.
To reach the top, visitors must climb around 570 concrete steps from the beach, passing through a tree-covered path. The site is most accessible in clear weather, and comfortable shoes are recommended for the ascent.
The copper figure is composed of 27 separate sections assembled together to form a single statue. Steel wire ropes hold the arms in place to protect them against the strong coastal winds that blow at this exposed location.
