Areia Branca Beach, Public beach in Metiaut suco, East Timor
Areia Branca Beach is a 600-meter-long sandy shore on the northeastern coast of Dili Bay, backed by low hills covered with Eucalyptus alba woodland. The beach provides free cabanas, rental picnic shelters, seafood restaurants, and access to boating and kayaking throughout the day.
The beach was developed as a tourism destination during Portuguese colonial rule and later experienced violence during the Indonesian occupation. These events remain part of the place's recent past.
Local fishermen practice traditional spearfishing at low tide near coral breaks and mend their nets beneath coastal trees.
The beach is most appealing at low tide when coral formations are easier to explore. Warmer months offer better swimming conditions and more favorable circumstances for water-based activities.
The surrounding area is part of an Important Bird Area home to Christmas Island frigatebirds and pink-headed imperial pigeons. This birdlife often goes unnoticed by visitors despite adding a hidden layer to the natural setting.
