Buru Regency, Administrative region in Maluku, Indonesia
Buru Regency is an administrative region occupying the northern portion of Buru Island in Maluku, with Namlea serving as its main center. The area encompasses ten districts organized across the tropical island landscape.
The region was established as its own regency in 1999 following a separation from the larger Central Maluku Regency. A significant administrative change occurred in 2008 when the southern portion split off to form South Buru Regency.
The local communities here follow traditions rooted in the island's way of life, visible in daily activities and local practices across the districts. These customs shape how people interact with their environment and each other.
You can reach Namlea by taking flights from Ambon or using ferry services from Galala Port in Ambon. Check transport availability before traveling since schedules may change depending on the season and weather conditions.
The region is known for extensive tree plantations that dominate parts of the landscape. It also serves as the primary agricultural producer for a staple crop that feeds much of the wider province.
