Sunnyside North Beach, Clothing-optional beach at Mount Eliza, Victoria, Australia
Sunnyside North Beach is a beach on the eastern shore of Port Phillip Bay in Mount Eliza, Victoria. The shoreline is sandy with patches of rock, and from the water's edge you can see across the bay toward Melbourne on a clear day.
In 1983, this stretch of shore was formally designated as a clothing-optional area under the Nudity Prescribed Areas Act, making it one of the first three such zones in the Melbourne region. The law put official backing behind what had already become an established local habit along this part of the bay.
The northern end of the beach is known as a clothing-optional area and draws a regular crowd of locals who treat it as part of their everyday routine. Visitors tend to be respectful of one another, and the general mood is relaxed and unpretentious.
A car park on Sunnyside Road gives access to the beach via a short walk along concrete paths. On warm days and weekends, the parking area fills up early, so arriving in the morning makes things easier.
This beach is the only legally designated clothing-optional area on the eastern side of Port Phillip Bay, which sets it apart from similar spots on the opposite shore. The concrete access paths that lead down to the sand are also uncommon at beaches of this type in the region.
