Bali Memorial, Memorial at Lincoln Square in Carlton, Melbourne, Australia.
The Bali Memorial is a granite and stainless steel fountain in Lincoln Square in Carlton, featuring 91 water jets that represent each Australian victim of the 2002 terrorist attacks. The structure occupies a thoughtfully landscaped area with seating surrounding it and is illuminated by approximately 200 lights after dark.
The Melbourne City Council initiated the project with landscaping work beginning in 1961, with official opening by Councillor Brens on July 23, 1965. It was created in response to the October 2002 terrorist attacks on Bali that killed many Australians.
The inscribed names of 22 victims from Victoria on the fountain sides create a space where visitors can connect a distant tragedy to their own community. This personal remembrance transforms the memorial into a meaningful gathering place for mourning and reflection.
The location is easily reached by public transport and the plaza itself is fully accessible with level ground and plenty of space to stand or sit. The best time for a quiet visit is early morning or late afternoon when fewer people are around.
On bombing anniversaries, the fountain transforms into a reflection pool where visitors experience moments of silence and remembrance together. This creates a powerful space for communities to gather and honor those who were lost.
