RMIT Design Hub, University building in Carlton, Australia
RMIT Design Hub is a university building in Carlton whose facade is covered by approximately 17000 circular glass panels creating a dynamic pattern. The two connected structures house student workspaces, research laboratories, storage areas, and various studio rooms.
The building was designed by Sean Godsell Architects and completed in 2012, occupying the site of the former Carlton & United Breweries. The new structure replaced the historic brewery while introducing contemporary architecture to the location.
The studios and exhibition spaces inside bring together designers, architects, and artists working on shared projects. You can see the different disciplines interacting daily in the labs and workshop areas throughout the building.
The building is easily accessible during daytime hours, with visitors able to use the main entrances to explore public areas. It is best visited on weekdays when the studios and exhibition spaces are in full operation.
The circular glass panels on the facade are not static but rotate automatically according to Melbourne weather forecasts. This system reduces heat absorption and was designed to eventually integrate solar energy generation.
