Silvan Reservoir

Silvan Reservoir is a water storage facility in the Dandenong Ranges surrounded by tall trees and open lawns. The park features walking trails of varying lengths, picnic areas with tables and barbecue facilities, a playground for children, and a fenced water catchment area.

The reservoir was built in response to a drought in 1914 that revealed the need for better water storage. It was completed in 1932 and became essential to Melbourne's water supply system.

The reservoir has been a gathering place for the local community for generations. Today, families and friends use the picnic areas and walking trails as a simple retreat from daily routines.

The water itself is fenced off and not open for swimming, fishing, or boating. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water for yourself, and check the weather before visiting, especially on warmer days or fire weather warnings.

Stone terraces and pergolas from the 1930s remain throughout the park, covered with vines and featuring gardens of azaleas and rhododendrons. These structures create a striking contrast with the surrounding bushland and offer a glimpse into the gardening traditions of that era.
