The Pram Factory, Alternative theater venue in Carlton, Victoria, Australia
The Pram Factory was a theater complex in Carlton with two performance spaces of different sizes. The larger hall accommodated about 150 people, while the smaller room could hold around 75 audience members.
The former factory building was converted to a theater in 1970 and served as a center for experimental performances until 1981. After closure, a shopping center was built on the site.
The name comes from its original use as a baby carriage factory, which visitors can remember when experiencing the space as a cultural hub. This industrial location became home to performance styles and artistic groups that had few other places to develop their work.
The site is located on Drummond Street in Carlton and cannot be visited today as it has been redeveloped. The shopping center that replaced it marks the exact location of the former theater building.
The site was the birthplace of Circus Oz, a modern circus that later became world-famous. In addition, the premiere of Don's Party took place here, a play that made Australian theater history.
