Kunanyi / Mount Wellington, Mountain summit near Hobart, Australia.
The mountain kunanyi / Mount Wellington rises above the city of Hobart and reaches a height of 1271 meters (4170 feet), with striking dolerite cliffs that stand out above the forested lower slopes. From the top, the view extends over the Tasmanian capital, the Derwent River and the surrounding valleys to the open sea.
European explorers first called the peak Table Mountain before it was renamed in 1832 in honor of the Duke of Wellington. Recognition of the traditional name kunanyi as an official part of the name came more than 180 years later in 2013.
The traditional name kunanyi comes from the Aboriginal people of Tasmania and was recognized in 2013 as an equal designation alongside the European name. Visitors today see both names on signs and maps, while local communities regard the peak as an important spiritual and cultural landmark.
A paved road leads all the way to the top and allows visitors without hiking experience to reach the summit. Several walking trails of varying difficulty cross the Wellington Park reserve and offer alternatives for pedestrians.
Weather conditions at the summit can change drastically within minutes, and snow sometimes falls even in the middle of summer. On some days, summer temperatures prevail at the foot of the mountain while icy winds blow at the top.
