Risdon Prison Complex

Risdon Prison Complex is a major correctional facility in Risdon Vale near Hobart housing prisoners across different security levels. The site contains separate wings for high-risk inmates and includes a dedicated mental health unit to serve those needing psychological support and treatment.

Construction began in 1956 following a Royal Commission inquiry triggered by escape attempts at an earlier facility in the 1940s. The new location was designed to address security weaknesses that had been identified in the previous prison system.
