Corner Inlet Marine National Park, Marine reserve in South Gippsland, Australia
Corner Inlet Marine National Park is a protected marine reserve spanning over 1,500 hectares along Victoria's southeastern coast. It features extensive seagrass meadows and mangrove forests that define the shallow waters and support diverse marine life.
This marine sanctuary was established in November 2002 by the Victorian Department of Environment to protect the marine ecosystem of Corner Inlet. The creation came as a response to the need for preserving this natural environment for the long term.
The waters here hold deep connections to the Gunaikurnai Peoples, who continue their traditional role in caring for this marine environment. They work to protect these waters and maintain their cultural practices within this place.
Access to the park is through Port Welshpool, located about 200 kilometers south of Melbourne, where boats can launch into the protected waters. Visitors should wear weather-appropriate clothing and check tidal patterns, as shallow areas regularly become exposed.
The park holds the largest concentration of Bar-Tailed Godwits and Great Knots in southeastern Australia. These wading birds can be spotted seasonally, showing the waters' importance as a stopover point on migration routes.
