Mount Beauty, Administrative division in Alpine Shire, Australia
Mount Beauty is a town at the junction of Kiewa Valley Highway and Bogong High Plains Road near the Kiewa River in northeastern Victoria. It serves as a gateway to mountain biking trails and outdoor recreation in the surrounding alpine region.
The State Electricity Commission established the town in 1949 to house workers building the Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme. Control passed to local government in 1967 once the project was completed.
The town hosts monthly weekend markets and an annual music festival that bring residents and visitors together throughout the year. These gatherings form the social heart of the community and create meeting points for people across the region.
The town stadium offers indoor sports facilities with a full-size court, changerooms, and disability access seating for around 80 people. Mountain roads in the area can become snow-covered in winter, so visitors should plan accordingly and check conditions before traveling.
The town preserves history through several Post Offices from its early years, including temporary camps numbered 2, 4, and 5 that operated between 1949 and 1953. These short-lived facilities reveal how quickly settlement expanded and how infrastructure kept pace with the growing worker colony.
