Mugga Lane Zoo, Zoo in Symonston, Australia
Mugga Lane Zoo was a 9-hectare animal park in Symonston that housed 116 different species in specialized enclosures designed for both animal care and visitor education. The facility featured various zones where guests could observe and learn about the animals on display.
The facility opened on December 19, 1979, originally named Canberra Wildlife Gardens before receiving its official zoo license in 1982. This license grant marked the start of its operation under the new Mugga Lane Zoo name.
The zoo dedicated itself to showcasing Australian wildlife through education, with animals like kangaroos, wombats, and reptiles living in dedicated spaces. Visitors came to learn about the creatures found across the country.
The zoo operated on a regular schedule throughout the week and on weekends for public visits. Visitors should have checked conditions beforehand, as weather and seasonal changes could affect the experience.
After closing in 2002, an unexpected aftermath unfolded: peacocks that once lived here escaped and have roamed South Canberra freely ever since. These feral birds remain a living reminder of the site's former role.
