Edmund Barton Building, Modernist office building in Barton, Australia
The Edmund Barton Building is an office complex made of concrete and steel with seven spreading wings that create a repeating pattern. The entire structure uses prefabricated concrete elements that come together to form one large, unified complex.
The building was completed in 1974 and named after Australia's first Prime Minister and a founder of the High Court. Its design reflected modern construction methods that were becoming popular in Australia during that era.
The building displays artworks throughout its spaces that honor notable figures and moments in Australian history. These pieces become part of your experience as you move through the interior areas.
The building underwent a major renovation to bring it up to modern safety standards and security requirements. Because the complex is quite large, plan for time to explore its various sections and interconnected areas.
The entire structure was built by repeating just three types of concrete beam components throughout the design. This simple composition creates a strong visual effect across the whole complex.
