Ahuriri Conservation Park, Conservation park in Otago and Canterbury Regions, New Zealand
Ahuriri Conservation Park is a large protected area in the mountains between Otago and Canterbury that contains river headwaters, forests, and open grasslands. The landscape varies from wooded slopes to expansive tussock flats and wetland areas in the lower sections.
The protected area was established in 2005 and secured land that previously operated as Birchwood Station. The transition to conservation marked the end of commercial farming and the start of ecological restoration.
The name refers to the Ahuriri Plain, a place with historical significance for local Maori communities. Visitors today can experience how people relate to this landscape and its natural cycles.
Getting to higher areas requires a high-clearance 4WD vehicle, especially beyond Ben Avon Ponds where road maintenance ends. Visitors should be prepared for rough terrain and changing mountain weather conditions.
The area is home to endangered black stilts and black-fronted terns, two bird species found in very few other places. These rare species use the upper river sections and shingle flats for breeding and hunting.
