Victoria Mansions, Art Deco apartment building in Christchurch, New Zealand
Victoria Mansions is a five-story residential building at the intersection of Victoria, Salisbury, and Montreal Streets, housing twenty-one dwelling units. The structure spans three street frontages and displays the characteristic geometry and streamlined form of Art Deco design.
Construction began in June 1935 under architect Heathcote Helmore's direction and reached completion in May 1936. The building became an important landmark in Christchurch's architectural heritage and was later recognized as a Category II heritage site.
The building displays geometric patterns and streamlined forms that reflect 1930s architectural tastes. These Art Deco elements remain visible in the exterior and detailing of the structure.
The building is not currently open to the public following significant damage from the 2011 earthquake. Restoration plans announced in 2020 focus on rehabilitating the structure while maintaining its historical appearance.
The original complex included a restaurant along Victoria Street with its own distinct street frontage. This commercial space was integral to the building's original design and shaped the streetscape of that era.
