Remutaka Range, Mountain range in Wellington Region, New Zealand
The Remutaka Range is a mountain range in the Wellington Region that stretches approximately 55 kilometers from the Hutt Valley to Turakirae Head, forming a natural boundary between the Wairarapa and Wellington regions. State Highway 2 crosses through it, providing access to numerous walking tracks and scenic viewpoints along the way.
An old railway line operated through the range until 1955, when the construction of the Rimutaka Tunnel provided a more direct route between the regions. This shift marked an important change in transportation across the area.
The name reflects traditional Maori pronunciation and was officially changed to Remutaka in 2017 following the Rangitane Tu Mai Ra Claims Settlement Act. This change shows how the region honors its indigenous heritage in everyday use.
The range is accessible via State Highway 2, which is open year-round and provides access points to walking tracks at various locations. Visitors should prepare for changeable weather and wear sturdy footwear if exploring the mountain paths.
During World War I, over 30,000 New Zealand soldiers marched across the range as part of their training before being sent overseas. This route remains a significant part of the region's military history today.
