Steeple Rock/Te Aroaro-o-Kupe, Rock formation at Wellington Harbor entrance, New Zealand.
Steeple Rock rises 7 meters above sea level at the western entrance of Wellington Harbor, featuring steep cliffs and sharp edges.
The rock received its dual name Steeple Rock/Te Aroaro-o-Kupe in 2009 during the Treaty of Waitangi settlement between Taranaki Whānui and New Zealand government.
The Māori name Te Aroaro-o-Kupe translates to 'The front of Kupe', connecting the location to the legendary Polynesian navigator Kupe.
Maritime navigation around the rock requires attention to weather conditions and shipping traffic, with a solar-powered light installed to guide vessels.
Several ships encountered difficulties near the rock, including the TEV Wahine ferry incident in 1968 that resulted in 53 casualties.
