Steeple Rock/Te Aroaro-o-Kupe

Steeple Rock/Te Aroaro-o-Kupe, Rock formation at Wellington Harbor entrance, New Zealand.

Steeple Rock is a rock formation located at the western entrance to Wellington Harbour, rising approximately 7 meters above sea level. The formation features steep cliffs and sharp-edged surfaces that stand out prominently from the surrounding water.

The rock received its official dual name in 2009 as part of Treaty of Waitangi settlement negotiations between Taranaki Whānui and the New Zealand government. This naming formally recognized the site's significance to the Māori community and acknowledged its long-standing cultural connection.

The Māori name Te Aroaro-o-Kupe references the legendary Polynesian navigator Kupe and ties this location to ancient voyaging stories. The dual naming reflects how this rock holds significance in local tradition and identity.

This rock formation is best viewed from the water or nearby coastal viewpoints that overlook the harbor entrance. The site sits in active shipping lanes, so visits should account for strong currents and maritime traffic in the area.

A solar-powered lighthouse was installed on the rock to help guide vessels through this challenging stretch of water. This modern safety installation is one of the few of its kind in the region and provides reliable guidance even in poor weather conditions.
