Whakapapa skifield, Ski resort on Mount Ruapehu, New Zealand
Whakapapa is a ski resort on Mount Ruapehu covering about 550 hectares of terrain between 1,580 and 2,300 meters in elevation. The site offers around 44 kilometers of runs of varying difficulty, accessed by a system of 12 lifts.
The resort began in the early 1900s as a destination for winter sports and pioneered skiing development on New Zealand's mountains. Its creation marked the start of organized ski tourism in the Southern Hemisphere.
The name Whakapapa comes from the Māori language and means genealogy, reflecting the deep ties to indigenous heritage. The place sits within Tongariro National Park, which is sacred to Māori people and also a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The site opens daily from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM during winter months and offers equipment rental on site. Visitors should prepare for changing mountain weather and bring warm clothing in layers.
The Sky Waka gondola lifts visitors 1.8 kilometers up the northern face to the Knoll Ridge Chalet, rising above the forested slopes. The ride itself offers sweeping views before you even reach the ski runs.
