Rangitoto Island Scenic Reserve, reserve in New Zealand
Rangitoto Island Scenic Reserve is a protected nature area on a volcanic island off the coast of Auckland. The island features a distinctive cone made of lava and ash that rises over 260 meters (850 feet) and is covered with native forest vegetation.
The island formed around 600 years ago following a volcanic eruption and has since been covered by forest. It held significance for Māori communities and was eventually designated as a protected reserve.
A short ferry ride connects the island to the mainland, with walking tracks of varying difficulty across the terrain. Visit on clear days when paths are dry and safe for hiking to the summit or exploring the forest.
The lava forest is a rare woodland type growing on porous volcanic rock that hosts several native tree species. This close relationship between the volcanic foundation and forest ecosystem makes the island scientifically valuable.
