Umupuia Beach

Umupuia Beach lies along the Pōhutukawa Coast with sandy shores backed by native trees and coastal plants. Rolling hills form the backdrop and frame the coastal landscape.

Thomas Duder acquired this coastal land in 1866 from Ngāi Tai Maori owners, establishing a lasting connection between European settlement and the local iwi. This land transaction shaped the area's character for generations to come.

The beach has long served as a meeting place for Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki people, who maintain their connection to the land through environmental practices. Visitors can observe the continuing presence and care of local iwi in this coastal area.

Access the beach via North Road from Clevedon, with parking facilities near the shoreline. Walking paths link the area to the nearby Duder Regional Park for further exploration.

The beach splits into a public access area and a private section above the high tide mark, owned by descendants of Thomas Duder. This historic division remains visible to visitors today.
