Waitawa Regional Park, Regional park on Tāmaki Strait coast, New Zealand.
Waitawa Regional Park is a coastal reserve along the Tāmaki Strait featuring three peninsulas with access to four separate bays. The 188-hectare property has designated zones for walking, mountain biking, horse riding, kayaking, and disc golf activities.
The site was originally a dynamite factory operated by Orica Explosives before being purchased by Auckland Regional Council in 2004. This acquisition transformed the industrial land into a public recreational area open to the community.
This place serves as a gathering space where visitors engage in outdoor activities along the waterfront and connect with the coastal environment. The shared recreational zones bring together different groups of people enjoying the water and landscape at their own pace.
The park opens at 6 AM year-round, closing at 7 PM during winter and 9 PM during daylight saving time. Pedestrian access continues after hours, though visitors should bring sturdy footwear and plan for changing coastal weather conditions.
One section of the beach operates as a marine education center where visitors learn about local water ecosystems. The park also connects to the Te Ara Moana Kayak Trail network, allowing paddlers to explore a wider coastal route.
