Tāpapakanga Regional Park, Regional park in Auckland Region, New Zealand
Tāpapakanga Regional Park sits along a sheltered bay with pebble beaches and walking trails that offer views of islands offshore. The park includes an old homestead and spans areas of both coastal and inland walking routes.
James Ashby settled in the bay in 1899 and his family farmed the land for generations. The property was donated to the council in 1990 and opened as a public park five years later.
The Ashby Homestead reflects how a family shaped this bay through farming and settlement over many generations. Walking around, you notice how their land use patterns are still visible in the landscape and local features today.
The park has multiple marked trails ranging from short walks to longer hikes through coastal and forested areas. Most paths are well-maintained and clearly signposted, making it straightforward to navigate on your own.
The park is a good spot for watching birds, with species like Oyster Catchers, Black Shags, and White-faced Herons appearing regularly throughout the year. These birds feed and rest in the bay, making casual wildlife watching part of the walking experience.
